The Long Lake Improvement Board was formed pursuant to, derives its authority from, and operates according to the Inland Lake Improvement Act. The lake board is the organization that implements improvements in Long Lake and is comprised of the following members:
• A waterfront property owner.
• Two representatives of Orleans Township.
• An Ionia County Commissioner.
• The Ionia County Drain Commissioner, or a representative of the drain commissioner’s office.

Officers of the lake board include the chair, the secretary, and the treasurer. The chair presides over meetings of the lake board, which the chair calls on an as-needed basis. The secretary maintains minutes and all lake board records. The treasurer maintains records of the lake board’s revenues and expenditures.
Funds are collected through the lake board’s assessment of residents within the Long Lake special assessment district. Currently, assessments appear on the December tax bill. The special assessment district for Long Lake includes all properties that border the lake and back lots that have deeded or dedicated lake access. Lakefront properties are assessed one unit of benefit, and back lots are assessed 0.75 units of benefit. In addition, contiguous lots in common ownership are assessed as one parcel provided only one house exists on the parcel.
